With Mailchimp's recent price increase as they move to be a CRM system and their other changes a lot of our clients are taking a deeper look at what they can do to reduce their email costs. Here are 5 Tips to help manage your email costs in 2019:

1. Clean your email list. Your list decays at about 2% a month and now that MailChimp is going to charge you for each contact vs email this change alone may increase your costs 23%. Use a tool like Neverbounce or Zerobounce to get rid of those older problematic emails.

2. Email validation at form submit. You can do this client side with some java script or both Neverbounce or Zerobounce have an API you can call at the time of form submission. This way you don’t get junk emails that you may have to pay for.

3.Focus on quality over quantity. Do your customers really want to hear from you daily? It is always way too easy to send another email blast. Focus on quality and segmentation of your list over quantity which can help you move to a lower priced email package. With some 293 Billion emails a day, how can you make yours personalized and more relevant?

    • Omnisend - Ecommerce focused
    • SendGrid - A good option for volume senders 
    • MailJet - Has SMS capability and a good mix of functionality
    • Sendy - Uses Amazon SES, simple and cheap

5. Look at Alternatives to email. As your customers migrate to other platforms you need to test them out as well. Your mileage will differ if you are B2B or B2C company.

    • Slack - We have seen great success with clients using slack as an email alternative.
    • LinkedIn - We have had great success in using LinkedIn to publish content. Definitely I recommend a test no matter what business you are in. 
    • Facebook Messenger Broadcast - You need to get approved and may want to use software that supports it like MobileMonkey.
    • YouTube Live Stream - You just need the right equipment and YouTube will do the rest for you. 
    • Skype - If you are an office based shop you can call/send messages up to 50 people at a time. 
    • Chatbots - Drift, Hubspot, and these bot platforms are all worth a look but the ROI is best on the B2C side unless you have scale.
