Is It Too Late to Advertise on ChatGPT Before Black Friday?

Reading Time: 7 minutes

If you sell online and you’re wondering whether there’s still time to get ads running in ChatGPT before Black Friday, the short answer is: there may still be time if you can launch by roughly November 2 to 9. Much later than that, December is the better plan.

Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. Adobe forecasts that visits to U.S. online stores coming from AI tools like ChatGPT will be up 130% from November 1 through December 31, compared with last year. That’s AI tools in general, not a measure of how ChatGPT ads perform.

So the real question isn’t only whether there’s time. It’s whether a few weeks of holiday ads will tell you enough to be worth the setup. Here’s how to work that out for your store.

Two dates that matter

The day your ads go live. Setup isn’t instant. Your website needs a way to tell OpenAI when an ad click turns into an order, your product list may need cleanup, and OpenAI reviews every ad and the page it links to before it runs.

The time you allow for a first test. When you start, nobody knows yet which of your products sell from ChatGPT. The first weeks are how you start to see which questions and products turn into orders, and which ones only spend money. In our launches, we plan two to three weeks of testing before the days that matter most. Results can still be inconclusive after that, which is why more time is better.

Count back from Thanksgiving week (it starts Monday, November 23) and the math is simple:

  • Live by about November 2: three weeks of testing before Thanksgiving week. This is the comfortable window.
  • Live by about November 9: two weeks of testing. Tighter, still workable.
  • Live after about November 9: that’s under two weeks before Thanksgiving week. You’d be collecting your first data during the peak shopping days. December is the better plan.

So “too late” isn’t a single date. It’s whether you can give your ads a real testing period before the weekend you care about.

What it takes to launch

If you go direct, you buy ChatGPT ads through Ads Manager, OpenAI’s own advertising tool, which it has been opening to more businesses since May. Check that you can get access before you plan around it. A store launch has four parts:

  1. Order tracking. OpenAI offers a small piece of tracking code for your website (its “pixel”), a direct connection from your store’s system (its “Conversions API”), or both, so orders from ads are counted. Without one of them, you can see clicks but not which of them became orders. If someone else runs your website, this is a task for them.
  2. Your product list, if you use it. OpenAI can build ads straight from your product catalog. If you go that route, prices, stock, names and photos have to match your website.
  3. The ads and the pages they link to. OpenAI reviews each ad’s headline, description, image and the page it links to before it runs, and your website can’t block OpenAI’s site checkers (OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot) from visiting it. Link to the product or category page, not your homepage.
  4. What counts as success. Decide what a good result looks like before you spend: new customers, orders, cost per order. Write it down.

Ads in ChatGPT appear below the answer and are labeled as sponsored. OpenAI says ads don’t change what ChatGPT recommends. OpenAI also says these ads show only to adults on the free version of ChatGPT and on the Go plan. They don’t show to people on Plus or Pro, on a plan their company or school pays for, or to anyone under 18. Being named in the answer itself is a separate job; we covered why ChatGPT names some businesses and not others.

If you sell on Amazon, there’s a second route. Amazon announced a ChatGPT ads pilot for select U.S. advertisers in September. Here’s what’s known about it so far.

What a test costs

You set the budget. If you pay per click, OpenAI recommends starting with a limit of $3 to $5 per click. That’s the most you agree to pay for a click, not what every click costs.

We recommend at least $50 a day for a holiday test. If clicks cost $3 to $5, that buys roughly 10 to 17 clicks a day. Whether that’s enough to judge depends on your traffic and how many of those clicks turn into orders. Spend much less and two or three weeks may not tell you much.

Those are the ad costs. If someone sets up and runs it for you, that’s a separate cost to weigh.

Who should wait

ChatGPT ads aren’t the right first move for every store this season. Sort these out before launching, even if that means waiting until December or later:

  • Your site can’t track orders yet. If you can’t see which clicks became sales, you’ll end the holiday season with spend and no answers.
  • Your product information doesn’t match your site. OpenAI requires the page an ad opens to match the product in the ad. Wrong prices, or items you no longer have, in your product list mean wasted clicks and possible problems in review.
  • You can’t fund two or three weeks of testing. A short test may leave too little evidence to judge.
  • Your buyers mostly use Plus, Pro, or a ChatGPT plan their company or school pays for. OpenAI doesn’t show ads on those plans.
  • Your current ads aren’t working. If your Google, Meta or Amazon ads are struggling, fix those before adding something new during your busiest month.

If you miss the window

Missing Black Friday isn’t the end of the season. Adobe’s holiday forecast covers November 1 through December 31, so December still counts. A December launch still gets you real holiday data to plan 2027 around.

If you want help before Black Friday

We’re running a ChatGPT ads launch sprint for 10 ecommerce brands before Black Friday. Applications close October 30. We go live within 7 days of kickoff, which allows a testing period before Thanksgiving week. Every brand that applies gets a free ChatGPT Shelf Audit showing who ChatGPT recommends in its category today, whether or not it’s a fit. After October 30, we’d rather start you in December than rush a launch.

Key takeaways

  • There may still be time if your ads are live by roughly November 2 to 9. That allows two to three weeks of testing before Thanksgiving week.
  • After about November 9, you’d be collecting first data on the biggest days. December is the better plan.
  • A store launch needs order tracking, accurate product information and ads that pass OpenAI’s review. Allow time for all three.
  • OpenAI recommends a $3 to $5 per-click limit to start. We recommend at least $50 a day for a holiday test.
  • Wait if you can’t track orders or fund a few weeks of testing.
